Children and Youth are Always Learning
Here are some ways families can make the most of learning at home so students come to school ready to learn.

Elementary Students

  • Let your child read to you; if your child doesn’t read, look through pictures and talk about them.
  • Have your child write, draw, or tell you a story every day.
  • Talk, talk, talk! Children learn from hearing and speaking words (no matter what language). Talk about likes and dislikes, the community and your day. 

Middle, Junior High & Senior High Students

  • Make sure your student has a quiet place and time to study and do homework.
  • Ask questions each day about homework and school. Instead of asking "what happened at school today," try asking: what was the funniest thing that happened today at school? Which subject or class do you like best? Why?
  • Think big! Talk about going to college and career interests; discuss the courses and tests your student needs to complete to go to college.

All ages

  • Daily routines (meals, homework, bedtime) help students do better in school.
  • Limit "screen time" - monitor how much time your child spends in front of the TV, computer or video game.
  • Set and support realistic but challenging goals. Believe that your student can do it and tell them you do.
  • Celebrate success; say something positive to your child each day!
